Leonid  Roshal, MD, PhD, Dr. Sc.(med), Professor of Pediatric Surgery. Directions in  practical and research  medicine  - disaster medicine, emergency conditions in children, neonatal surgery, abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, trauma, infection in surgery, laparoscopy in pediatric surgery, laser surgery.

Dr. Leonid Roshal  is a founder of scientific school in pediatric surgery on  conservative methods of  treatment of surgical diseases. In recent years, his scientific interests are associated with clinical and fundamental researches on mechanisms of damage and repair in children with injuries, including restoration of the damaged brain. Dr. Leonid Roshal  is an author of 500 scientific works, co-author of 8 monographs and guidelines and a number of methodological recommendations. He  has 8 certificates for inventions. 27 candidate and 8 doctorate dissertations were prepared and defended under his supervision.

In 1957, Dr. Roshal  graduated from  the Pirogov Moscow Medical Institute, specialty “Pediatrics”. He began his career as a district pediatrician in an outpatient pediatric unit. Then he finished residency at the chair of pediatric surgery (head-Prof. Doletsky ) at the Russian Medical Academy of Post-diploma Education at  Rusakovskaya Hospital (now "St. Vladimir Pediatric Clinical Hospital” ). Being a student of post-graduate courses, Dr. Roshal took an active part in organizing a department of neonatal surgery; he read the first cycle of lectures on neonatal surgery to students of the chair of pediatric surgery. In 1961-1980, he  worked at   Vladimirsky Clinical and Research Institute (MONIKI ). During this period, Dr.  Roshal worked actively  in almost all areas of pediatric surgery. In 1964, he defended  his Candidate Dissertation  "Acute intestinal intussusception in children" in which he presented his  scientific substantiation and implementation into practice of a conservative technique for  treating this disease  as well as preventive steps against it development.

One of the most pressing problems of pediatric surgery in the 60s - 80s- destructive pneumonia and its consequences-  became the subject of Dr. Roshal's doctorate dissertation research "Long-term results of unilateral lung surgeries in children" (1970). And again,  fundamental interests directly intersect with healthcare management in pediatrics  and preventive  medicine. As a chief freelance pediatric pulmonologist of  Moscow Region,  Dr.  Roshal  organizes a system of dispensary control and preventive measures at the pediatric level. During this period, the section of pediatric pulmonology at the   Society of Pediatricians  of  Moscow Region was actively functioning   under his leadership.  In  1981, Dr. Roshal became the  head of  department of emergency surgery and pediatric trauma at the Research Institute of Pediatrics (now "National Medical Research Center of Children's Health" of the Ministry of Health of Russia) with  clinical premises located in  the oldest Moscow children’s hospital No. 20 named after Timiryazev. In 2003, the hospital was reorganized into the "Clinical and Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery  and Trauma” subordinate to the Department of  Healthcare of  Moscow, and Dr. Roshal headed it as a director, and since 2015 has become its President.

During this period, the life of Dr. Roshal is inextricably linked to emergency surgery and disaster medicine. And again, it is a combination of fundamental scientific interests with a systemic managerial  approach. The surgical clinic, headed by Leonid Roshal, was one of the first in Moscow where  laparoscopic surgeries  for acute appendicitis in children and  minimally invasive functionally stable osteosynthesis for bone fractures in children were implemented.  Severe injuries in children, polytrauma and, first of all, severe TBI, as problems of  a modern metropolis, is one of the strategic directions for the  team headed by Prof. Roshal nowadays.

Starting from the moment of the first mobile team which was created by Dr. Roshal  to help children-victims  after the earthquake in Armenia (1988), Dr. Roshal saved and treated children during wars and disasters in different parts of Russia and around the world. A mobile pediatric team consisting of specialists-pediatricians  from the Clinical and Research Institute of Emergency Pediatric Surgery  and Trauma   was created to help children in wars and disasters.

Since 2000,  Dr. Roshal  has taken an active part in  the sphere of education and legal protection of medical workers. In 2010, he founded the National Medical Chamber of Russia and since then and up to now is  elected as its President.
